A The area is named after Daniel and Gideon Smith, two brothers who settled on the Mountain in 1740.

Q How big is the lake?

A Approximately 500 miles of shoreline, encompasses 22,000 acres.

Q Is the lake natural or man-made?

A Man-made, to produce hydro-electric power.

Q What fish are commonly caught?

A Large & small mouth bass, muskies, bream, striped bass, crappies, northern pike, rock bass & trout.

Q When is the best time for fishing?

A Spring & Fall are peak seasons, but fishing is good year round.

Q Is a fishing license required for fishing during my stay at Bernard’s Landing?

A Yes, a 5 day non-resident state-wide freshwater license is $15.00. A resident statewide freshwater license is $17.00 for a year. Click here to review the full menu of options available for fishing licenses.

Q What are the legal restrictions limiting size of fish & amount of catch?

A Bass-no fish kept under 12" daily limit 8. Muskies–no fish kept under 26" daily limit 2. Striped bass-no fish kept under 20" daily limit 2. Trout-no fish kept under 7" daily limit 6.

Q Is hunting allowed?

A Yes, nearby through the cooperation of Appalachian Power & the Commission of Game & Inland Fisheries.

Q What about picnics?

A We’ll be happy to pack a picnic basket for you just give us a 24 hour notice.

Q What is the average temperature range during the year?

Q What types of accommodations can be rented?

A Two & three bedroom townhomes, patio homes, one, two, & three bedroom condos; all located on the shore of Smith Mountain Lake. Click here for detailed descriptions.

Q What are the rental rates?

Q What is included in the unit?

A All units are completely furnished, including TV w/cable, cooking utensils, flatware, dishes, and bed & bath linens.

Q What are the check-in & check-out times?

A Check-in time is after 4PM and check-out is by 11AM.

Q Can we check-in earlier or stay past 11AM?

A Arrangements can be made for early check-in or late check-out for an additional charge.

Q What should we bring?

A Towels for swimming pool & spa use and appropriate sports apparel.

Q What is appropriate sports apparel?

A Tennis shoes are required on the tennis courts. Swimmers are not allowed in the pool in "cut-offs" or similar non-regulation swimwear.

Q Are there facilities for "cooking out"?

A Some units have grills or hibachis, which you may take out on the grass. For safety’s sake, do not use them on the decks and porches. You are welcomed to bring your own grill if you wish.

Q Is there a restaurant?

A The award-winning Landing Restaurant is located on the lower level of the Welcome Center, overlooking the marina, and offers a complete lunch & dinner menu. Click here for more information on dining on and off property.

Q Is there daily maid service?

A No, but every unit has a dishwasher, washer & dryer. Daily maid service can be arranged for an additional fee.

Q Can we bring our pet?

A Sorry but as a courtesy to all our guests we cannot allow pets.

Q What do I do in case of an emergency?

A Call the front desk at 721-8870 or call the rescue squad, fire or police departments at 911.

Gearing Up For Fun

Q If I bring my boat, is there overnight docking available?

A Yes, we have floating convenience docks throughout the property available for use on a daily or weekly basis.

Q How can we arrange to rent a boat? And how much does it cost?

A Boat rental is available at our marina. Call (540) 721-7800 for additional information or check with our front desk. Rates are based on the amount of time you use the boat & the type of boat you rent.

A Roanoke with an SMSA population 220,000 is about 45 minutes (35 miles) away.
